Personal Branding Canvas

The Personal Branding Canvas

Luigi Centenaro · BigName · 2014

Introduction
A One-Page Canvas Built Around the Promise of Value

Luigi Centenaro, founder of the consultancy BigName, presented the Personal Branding Canvas in 2014 at Tim Clark's Business Model You MasterClass in Amsterdam (Centenaro, 2014). He based it on personal business design, drawing on Clark's Business Model You and on Osterwalder and Pigneur's Business Model Generation (Centenaro, 2014). Where the personal business model canvas centres on revenues, his canvas centres on the promise of value, so that people can find their promise and convey it to the right audience (Centenaro, 2014). It is meant to help people describe, design and reinvent their personal brand without knowing branding and marketing concepts (Centenaro, 2014). Centenaro calls the canvas an "ever-evolving prototype" (Centenaro, 2014); a new format in 2017 added the Arena and the Competitors (Centenaro, 2017). The 2026 edition reduces the canvas to nine building blocks to make it simpler to use (BigName, n.d.-b). BigName's getting-started guide shows this edition, although its process text still mentions the Communication and Investments blocks of the earlier format (BigName, n.d.-a).

The Model

Personal Branding Canvas, 2026 edition: a large circle with the Arena at its centre and Competence, Identity, Profession and Credibility around it; next to it Promise; then Positioning above the Competitors circle; Audience on the right; numbers give the order of the blocks

Elements

Definitions follow BigName's Getting Started guide, which shows the 2026 edition (BigName, n.d.-a), with Arena and Competitors from Centenaro (2017). The guide sorts the blocks into receiver, sender and activation; the block numbers are the order printed on the canvas. Above the blocks, an unnumbered field asks for the goal: "why should I do Personal Branding?" (BigName, n.d.-a, figure).

Receiver
  • 01

    Audience

Who needs to know (block 1): "customers, influencers and their communities", whom the guide calls "the real stars". The audience is the receiver the person wants to influence, and it is the place to start when there is no personal branding strategy yet (BigName, n.d.-a).

Sender
  • 02

    Competence

What the person can do (block 3): their abilities, contacts and skills. The guide adds: "Don't be afraid to boast!" (BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 03

    Identity

Who the person is (block 4): what makes them unique, because that is what "makes you successful" (BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 04

    Credibility

Why the person is credible (block 5). People "don't believe in fairytales anymore, they also want facts", so this block shows why others can trust the person (BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 05

    Profession

What the person does and how (block 2): their services, but also their talents and their soft and hard skills, "whatever produces value" (BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 06

    Arena

The area in which a professional wants to compete and gain visibility (Centenaro, 2017). It sits at the centre of the four sender blocks and is worked on together with the profession (block 6; BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 07

    Promise

So what (block 7): people sign up for the profession when they have high expectations, so the promise answers what is in it for them (BigName, n.d.-a). The canvas centres on this promise of value, which the person conveys to the right audience (Centenaro, 2014).

Activation
  • 08

    Positioning

Why this person specifically (block 9): how the person is different from others. The guide asks whether this differentiation is "clear and effective" (BigName, n.d.-a).

  • 09

    Competitors

A secondary mini-block that prompts thinking about differentiation and competitive positioning (Centenaro, 2017). On the canvas it sits between positioning and audience (block 8; BigName, n.d.-a).
